Collecting military medals and military ribbons is a fascinating past-time that is truly rewarding. Any service medal collector will tell you that these are not simply objects to be kept in a display box. These collector’s items represent the bravery and dedication of war veterans in days gone by. War medals are awarded for campaign service, long service, loyalty, accomplishment, acts of bravery and heroism – they are not merely decorative objects but instead symbols of the values that all of humanity should strive to uphold.
On occasion a person may be given a military medal that was passed on from a relative. For some people this may spark some interest into the different types of medals that one could collect and a fulfilling hobby begins. Some great places to find medals would be car boot sales, antique fairs, garage sales or medal collectors’ fairs. The problem arises when you already have a substantial collection of your own and are searching for any particular piece. You could spend years going from fair to fair or sale to sale, never finding what you are looking for. A great way to find these missing pieces would be to find an online service medal store.

Well, it's not "improper."
You know, in many countries - when the publish the so-called Medal Count, they rank the countries according to the number of Golds - not the total number of medals.
For example, in Germany: http://de.eurosport.yahoo.com/olympische-winterspiele/
If you rank it by number of medals per person in the country, Norway is probably way out front, and Canada and Germany are clearly ahead of the USA.
I would suggest a quality-weighted medal count, in which a Gold counts three, a silver two and a bronze 1. Would this be more fair?
Personally, even as a proud American, I find the Medal Count chest-thumping during every Olympics a bit distasteful. It shouldn't be surprising that the World's biggest economy should produce the most people with the most time to devote to their sports to get medals - or that corporate sponsorship and NCAA rules (including significantly Title IX) will swell the ranks of well-trained amateurs funded by sponsorship and advertising dollars and funded by money siphoned away from the money-trees of college football and basketball.
It's great that people who devote their lives to training have a place to measure themselves against the world - but it is a bit obnoxious to focus so maniacly on the Medal Count when it isn't usually a surprise that the US wins in the Medal count.
Of course, I think that this is the first time the US has "won" the Medal Count in the Winter Olympics - so woo hoo, but still - we should have always been winning - so it is more embarassing that we haven't so much in the past.
In any case, perhaps we should enjoy it while it lasts because China will be winning all of these things soon - and the EU might start lumping all of their medals together - and then we would be in trouble Olympically speaking.
