Peru Package: Archeological Wonders of the North
Although relatively unknown, Chavin de Huantar, a magnificent temple nestled deep in the mountains, is one of the true archeological gems of Peru, and of the most impressive remnants of Peru's early civilizations. Located in the Cordillera of Ancash, at the foot of snow-capped Andean mountains, about 250 kilometers from Lima and at a towering height of over 3,100 meters, the fascinating ruins have been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.
This phenomenal complex bursts at the seams with incredible work, heritage of one the earliest civilization of Peru. With gigantic stone-faced platforms engraved with stone plaques, sculptures of odd hybrid human and animal creatures, and labyrinthine underground passages, Chavin de Huantar is one of the most interesting archeological sight in the country, and a constant reminder of the power and wits of former civilizations.
The temple is dated back to between 1500 and 500 BCE, known as the Formative Period in Peru, when Andean societies began forming and organizing, before culminating with the Inca Empire in the 15th century. Unbelievable amount of labor force, as well as highly complex techniques must have been used to create such a monumental construction, which is believed to have been abandoned around 200 BCE. Findings have indicated that social instability and upheaval began to occur between 500 and 300 BCE, at the same time that the larger Chavín civilization began to decline. Large ceremonial sites were abandoned and were replaced by villages and agricultural land.
Tourism activity is progressively expanding at Chavin, although remaining quite modest, with up to 60,000 visitors every year. If you are interested in archeology and history, and like to stray away from the crowds of tourists that populate more famous sites, you will delight in exploring the spectacular ruins, and enjoy its particularly picturesque surroundings. Add this extraordinary destination to your Peru package vacation for an unforgettable experience.

Ivory powder sculputure?
I found this very nice sculpture, small, in an antique place in Peru. The man said it was Italian and that it was made out of ivory powder... pretty much poured in a mold to create the sculpture. Does that have any value? I am against harvesting animal parts but I really liked the sculpture, and besides it was old...not sure if that justifies it. It had a very nice white finish, velvety look and very soft to the touch. Does it sound like anything worth it to buy? I am hoping to reach someone who knows about antiques who can tell me more about how much something like that is worth. My common sense tell me that a piece carved straight from the ivory has more value rather than something that has been turned into powder and then mixed with water and who knows what else and then poured into a mold. But I am not expert, so I hope you can tell me more about this kind of item. The sculputure was very delicate and it was about 12x12x7 inches.
Ivory Powder would not be an antique. So just don't overpay for it. If you like it, great, buy it, but NOT as an investment antique. The binder in an ivory powder statue is likely a modern resin.
Statue found in Peru, unknown material from which it is carved. Changes colour.
