Ramsey Island
Ramsey Island lies off the North Pembrokeshire coast near St Davids and is a popular visit by Wales Holidays tourists, particularly those interested in wildlife and legend.
Its name is a throwback to the Viking age, as are the names of the other islands around the Welsh coast, for the Norsemen found the islands useful stopping off points for their pillaging raids and vital sources of fresh water and birds' eggs.
On the map, Wales Holidays visitors may think of it as the right hand of the broad embrace of St Bride's Bay, Skomer Island to the south being the left hand, enclosing the bay's beautiful sandy beaches and rocky coves.
Ramsey's Welsh name is Ynys Dewi (David's Island) so it commemorates Wales's patron saint as well as its bird population from its Norse name Ravens Island. Owned by the RSPB, who welcome ornithologically-oriented Wales Holidays visitors, it has spectacular sea bird cliffs and has one of the most important grey seal breeding colonies in Southern UK.
It is one of the best reserves in Wales to see the chough and the peregrine falcon while its cliff ledges teem with guillemots and razorbills and its cliff tops with Manx shearwaters and several varieties of gull. Wales Holidays visitors can reach it by way of a seven days a week boat service from the mainland at St Justinians, where the Lifeboat Station is an added attraction. The options are a trip round the island or visit to the RSPB HQ in the farm where there is a rich supply of information.
The island's peregrine falcons have earned historic renown. When Henry 1st visited the island he let one of his falcons loose on a passing Heron and a local peregrine got to it first. He was so impressed by its speed and efficiency that he insisted on Ramsey peregrines for his falconry ever after.
On the mainland side of the island is a row of fang-like rocks called The Bitches which constrict the tidal flow at certain times, causing a race of up to seven knots which kayakers and surfers find a challenge. These teeth, which the Wales Holidays visitor can see from the mainland, are reputed to have been cut with an axe by St Justinian who wanted a peaceful retreat on the island and did not want others crossing the causeway to disturb him. The final cut nearest the island is called The Axe.

Which patron saint is the best to pray to in desperate times?
I have been praying to St. Peregrine and St. Jude for some time. Of course I have been praying to God, Mary and Jesus too. My boyfriend is in really bad condition right now and I need all the saints I can to pray to. Someone.. please help!!
None of them. The entire Scriptural record testifies that the Creator is the One to whom prayer should be directed(Psalm 5:1,2 and Matthew 6:9), that he is the "Hearer of Prayer" (Psalms 65:2; & chap. 66:19) and has power to act in behalf of the petitioners. (Mark 11:24; Ephesians 3:20)
Though some claim that prayer may properly be addressed to others, such as to God's Son, the evidence is emphatically to the contrary. True there are rare instances in which words are addressed to Jesus Christ in heaven. Stephen, when about to die, appealed to Jesus, saying, "Lord Jesus, received my spirit." Acts 7:59) However, the context reveals a circumstance giving basis for this exceptional expression. Stephen at that very time had a vision of "Jesus standing at God's right hand," and evidently reacting as if he were in Jesus' personal presence, he felt free to speak this plea to one whom he recognized as the head of the Christian congregation (Acts 7:55,56; Colossians 1:18) Similarly, the apostle John, at the conclusion of the Revelation, says,"Amen! Come, Lord Jesus." (Revelation 22:20) But again the context shows that, in a vision (Revelation 1:10 & chap. 4, verses 1,2), John had been hearing Jesus speak of his future coming and thus John responded with the above expression of his desire for that coming. (Revelation 22:16, 20) In both cases, that of Stephen and that of John, the situation differs little from that of the conversation John had with a heavenly person in this Revelation vision. (Revelation 7:13, 14; compare Acts 22:6-22. There is nothing to indicate that Christian disciples so expressed themselves under other cir-
cumstances to Jesus after his ascension to heaven. Thus, the apostle Paul writes: "In everything by prayer and supplication along with thanksgiving LET YOUR PETITIONS BE MADE KNOWN TO GOD.' Philippines 4:6.
