The Road to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi
While the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia is still 3 years away, preparations are already in full swing to accommodate this gigantic event. In fact, Russia has set aside a whopping 327 billion rubles for the development and expansion of the two clusters that would be utilized for the hosting of the Games.
The Coastal Cluster would be built at the coast of the Black Sea. The venues would be clustered around a central water basin, which is also the site of the Medals Plaza. The structures to be built around the coastal cluster include the Maly Ice Palace, the Olympic Curling Centre, the Olympic Oval, the Sochi Olympic Skating Centre, the Bolshoi Ice Palace, and the Olympic Stadium. Also, the main Olympic Village is located here along with the International Broadcast Centre. Meanwhile, the Mountain Cluster is located at Krasnaya Polyana, Krasnodar Krai. Infrastructures to be built here include the Biathlon and Ski Complex, Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard Park, Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort, the Russian National Sliding Centre, the Russian National Ski Jumping Centre, and the Rosa Khutor Plateau Olympic Village. All these infrastructures are brand new and are specifically constructed for this Olympics. In addition, environmental protection measures are also being implemented throughout the construction.
Of course, preparations for an event such as the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi is going to need more than just creating buildings and game venues. A sudden influx of people is going to create a huge logistical problem; hence the organizers need to be prepared for that. In fact, 580 million dollars is going to be spent in upgrading the telecommunications system of the region. The improvements include a Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) network capable of serving up to 10,000 subscribers, 700 kilometers of fiber-optic cables along the Anapa-Dzhugba-Sochi highways and Dzhugba-Krasnodar branch, and digital broadcasting infrastructure. This includes radio and TV broadcasting stations, an infocommunication centre, and 3 HDTV satellites. Also, a 5-year plan to increase power in the Sochi region is in place. Aiming to increase the regional energy capacity by 2.5 times, power stations are gradually being constructed along the region. Also, transportation facilities, which are deemed poor especially in Krasnaya Polyana, are being improved. A train station of Sochi Light Metro would connect the area with Sochi Olympic Village, the airport, and downtown Sochi. In addition, a new offshore terminal located at the Sochi seaport would allow docking of 3000-seat cruise ships. A new terminal at the Sochi Airport, as well as the development of backup airports, was built. And to top all these, new roads and railroads are being made and those existing are being upgraded. And to top it all up, security in the Sochi region would be tightened considerably, given the profile of the Olympics and the recent war in South Ossetia. In fact, the Russian military offered their S-400 Triumf surface to air missile system as part of this effort.
It is safe to say that the Russian government is on the road to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi a successful one. While the countdown for this event is still 3 years away, it is a good sign that they are pulling all the stops to ensure a safe and successful staging of this huge worldwide event.
