Boston: MINI Convertible to be Inspired by Goodwood too?
Boston: MINI Cooper hardtop fans will more likely than not like the latest design from the iconic auto brand. MINI has teamed up with luxury automaker Rolls Royce. The two brands introduced their respective vehicles, the MINI Cooper S and the Ghost and watched as the two models hit if off so well that they wanted to reproduce together. The resulting vehicle is being referred to as the "2012 MINI Inspired by Goodwood," a reference to the name of the Rolls Royce factory. The brainchild of these two seemingly opposite vehicles did expose a fact likely surprising to most – most of the MINI's genes are dominant and those of the Rolls Royce are recessive. Now who would have guessed that?
For the most part, the 2012 MINI Inspired by Goodwood looks like any other MINI you would find on a Boston MINI Cooper hardtop or Boston MINI Convertible dealer's lot. In fact, it would be a fair argument to say the average consumer would not even notice the Rolls Royce features in the new MINI, especially considering the only open reference to the luxury brand in the interior of the vehicle is an inscription at the very bottom of the dash, tucked in and sitting behind the gear shifter that reads "Goodwood". Since the average consumer likely does not know what the term Goodwood references, it's a safe bet to say a Rolls Royce Ghost would not be suspected by most as the father of this vehicle. However, if you look closely, there are subtle clues.
To start, both the exterior and the interior of this vehicle looks nicer than your average MINI found at your local Boston MINI Convertible and hardtop dealership. Most notably, the vehicle comes that color made famous by Rolls Royce - Diamond Black Metallic. Also on the exterior of the vehicle are two chrome details that sit just below the mirrors of the vehicle that again reference Goodwood reading, "inspired by Goodwood". Besides these two features, for all intents and purposes the vehicle looks like any other MINI.
The fact that a Rolls Royce is the father of this vehicle is slightly more apparent on the interior of the vehicle, though the features remain subtle inside as well. The interior color, called Cornsilk, is a Rolls Royce color. Leather in this color cloak the doors, fit tightly over the headsets with detailed stitching, and cover the center console. Walnut wood pieces are used as trim and were manufactured at the Goodwood plant. Plush floor mats are made of lamb's wool (and make you feel like you should remove your shoes before entering the vehicle). Finally, the upper dash comes in stitched black leather.
The introduction of the 2012 MINI Inspired by Goodwood begs the question of if the vehicle will be made into convertible form as well. No specific information has been released by either MINI or Rolls Royce to date, but considering the current production number of the 2012 MINI is set to halt at just 1,000 units, it seems that a convertible version is unlikely. But then again, the original combination of a MINI and a Rolls Royce was as unlikely as they come so who knows what the future will hold.
