Refreshment and Psalm 19

Psalm 19 reads as follows from the American Standard version of the Bible:

1The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament showeth his handiwork.

2 Day unto day uttereth speech, And night unto night showeth knowledge.

3 There is no speech nor language; Their voice is not heard.

4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,

5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, And rejoiceth as a strong man to run his course.

6 His going forth is from the end of the heavens, And his circuit unto the ends of it; And there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

7 The law of Jehovah is perfect, restoring the soul: The testimony of Jehovah is sure, making wise the simple.

8 The precepts of Jehovah are right, rejoicing the heart: The commandment of Jehovah is pure, enlightening the eyes.

9 The fear of Jehovah is clean, enduring for ever: The ordinances of Jehovah are true, and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the droppings of the honeycomb.

11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: In keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can discern his errors? Clear thou me from hidden faults.

13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me: Then shall I be upright, And I shall be clear from great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in thy sight, O Jehovah, my rock, and my redeemer.

 

This psalm can be looked at with the running theme of refreshment for the soul highlighted in verse 7.

The St. Joseph edition has the following translation for verse 7,

"The law of the Lord is perfect, affording refreshment for the soul, the decree of the Lord is worthy of trust, imparting wisdom to the simple."

Refreshment is a wonderful thing and you could never really say I don't want refreshment.  And that is one thing about this psalm, is that you should desire what is desirable, as it says it verse 11 " more to be desired."

Refreshment is such a beautiful concept that anyone would look for it and even an era for a nation, a time of year, a season can be looked at as a new time or era of refreshment.

Yet refreshment is not always looked to with the idea of overflow and it is more so something that I might occasionally get in small ways and the big ticket items of refreshment seem to be as distant as the stars of heaven

There can be an unlocking of additional and further meaning with a greater understanding of  the overflow of blessings involved with refreshment and everything else that is depicted in this psalm and this overflow incorporates the idea of big, and wondrous and even miraculous.

A key to eliciting further meanings from the psalm comes from verse 11 which says,

"More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the droppings of the honeycomb"

What is depicted in this verse is the clear idea of overflow, all in the positive sense, with the sweetness of honey and fine gold representing the finest of any and all things symbolically.

The Lord in his word isn't going to put the stamp of desirability on something that can't be had. These great things that this psalm is talking about can and will happen as you seek and trust in Him.

The honey that drips from the honeycomb represents an overflow of honey and this theme of overflow goes with along with the refreshment of the soul and all forms of refreshment as well as with the largess of the presence of the Lord that this psalm is speaking of in that the overflow is to the person and people that are abiding in this refreshment. The blessing is not in the distance but right there..

Joel chapter 2 verse 24 says,

The threshing floors shall be full of wheat, And the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.

These threshing floors and vats weren't a million miles away, otherwise what good would the overflow do?

The ideas of new wine and new oil would be along the lines of refreshment, refreshment that is not just slight but occurring with overflows, just like the overflow of honey in this psalm which represents more than enough.

All of this is out goodness that is something to be desired even more than fine gold, which means that these refreshments will find fineness, a fineness that extends past what gold will offer. These offerings, found through and in the word of the Lord, exceed all that can be understood and represented by gold and what gold can bring to the table.

All the other verses of this psalm can be looked at with a view towards this amazing fineness and the staggering overflow.

The first six verses of this psalm are referring to sights in the sky. At the time they didn't have the Hubble telescope and didn't get pictures of the stars that are available today, but the wonderment of the sun and the distant stars was quite obvious even without a telescope.

Earlier on in his career, David was a shepherd and he must have seen some great sights in the sky as he was about his business.

These first 6 verses go to a reality that is there today, that the Lord communicates to individuals through nature and through hand crafted sights in the skies and this is part of the overflow of communications and blessings that extend from the Lord in the context of communion and prayer with him, and even within the process of prayer itself the overflow of honey can be experienced by those who are praying..

So someone who is seeking the Lord should be at least aware of all possible communications through the vast realms of nature and close up sights in the skies, particular sightings that would be specific to time and place and of an overflow right in your presence, all of this is indicative of the closeness of the Lord to you and that some communications would be of an unspoken nature yet are clearly to be understood as devised communications, not to be taken lightly or brushed aside, but to be deciphered and understood as to what the meaning is that is being brought forth.

But for example if the sudden appearance of a multi layered design in the sky is right in front of you in the form of a majestic sunset, this can be a clear example of an overflow towards you in these exciting and exhilarating moments.

This psalm is also about discernment and the discernment maybe also of errors and these unspoken communications are to be seen as part of the help and aid towards discernment including corrections and also along the lines of invitations towards what might be new and glorious for you..

While language is important, the relationship with the Lord always goes beyond language according to this psalm and you may not even be 100 percent capable of expressing everything that you hold in your heart, yet the Lord goes also to those unspoken realms and reaches into communication there as well.

The warning spoken of in verse 11 is only to your benefit and to keep you in line for the rewards. If you want to swim, but there are dangerous currents that are unseen, you would like a warning about that.  In the same way, you might have hidden faults that you need to be warned about in that you might not see them clearly and they might lead you astray into a possible danger.

In verse 12 it says "who can discern his errors," and this goes into just how difficult it is too bubble up what exactly are the core issues you are dealing with and how to address them.

You might think you two biggest problems are this, when in fact there may be others that are there as well and might say carry more importance. Using verse 12, you can ask the Lord to bubble up and make clear what as a priority needs to be addressed and how, amid the mix of some inner or outer turmoil that you might be dealing with.

And it is understandable that anyone would have trouble in that you can be so close to the problems and issues you don't have a good free standing view of exactly what they are, how they prioritize in importance and how they can be dealt with. This is why the help of the Lord in this way is needed by anyone, in that problems are too close for comfort and the Lord can draw out and address the issues that deep down are really there and this in itself is a matter of refreshment.

Ask the Lord to bubble up what is really going on in the substratum and help you with the mixed up or tangled up view you have so you can see clearly what needs to be addressed and how and how the Lord's mending grace can be there for what needs to be fixed.

There is sureness to the wisdom that the Lord brings as per verse 7, there is an overflowing of wisdom and this is another association of increase where the Lord will increase wisdom. An example today in the world is the increased wisdom towards discoveries in science and technology. At the same time this wisdom will be and needs to be right on spot, not in the distance where it will not be accessible.

Verses 8 and 9 says:

8 The precepts of Jehovah are right, rejoicing the heart: The commandment of Jehovah is pure, enlightening the eyes.

9 The fear of Jehovah is clean, enduring for ever: The ordinances of Jehovah are true and righteous altogether.

In other words you can't go wrong, the Lord brings about enduring measures and this is part of the trust involved, that there will not be a drop off in this providential help from the Lord; it will be around the next corner and the next corner after that.

Enlightenment like refreshment is always good and there will be the constant sweet drip of overflowing honey with enlightenment as well as refreshment, a subject of joy for the heart.

You can trust that these gifts will find you they will find you anywhere and these gifts will go out the anyplace on the earth and all of the earth and will be with you to the end of the world.
