Can a ring with enamel be resized?
I've found a heavy gold Masonic ring (have not bought it yet) $150, would cost over $300 new. It needs to be enlarged at least two sizes, problem is it has enamel work on the sides. Has anyone had experience getting an enameled ring resized?
I'm less concerned with the cost than with the damage- it's too good looking a ring to ruin.
It's a 32nd Degree, the Rose Croix is on one side, 14th Degree Yod on the other. (fairly typical)
Yes - the sizing is usually done from the bottom portion, and a good jeweler should have no problems working around the enameled portion - especially since it's being enlarged.
I would double-check with the jeweler to be sure they feel comfortable doing the work, but it's something a craftsman should be able to handle.
Resizing a plated ring is another matter... usually best left alone (unless it can be mildly warmed and stretched (about 1 size)), since the metal underneath (usually jeweler's brass) will show and the plating becomes compromised.
