According to the NEW Lexicon Webster’s Dictionary, a Buckle is “a stiff fastening attached to one end of a belt, ribbon, strap, etc., the other end being threaded through it and secured by a hole over its spiked tongue as and when required; a similar device in the form of an ornament . . .”
Belt buckles are hot today, and can add style and fashion to any look. They have been in existence for many years, having started, basically, as a utilitarian device. However, today they are available in a vast array of designs, styles, and uses.
Hearts, flowers, butterflies, are most frequently incorporated in and designed as ladies’ belt buckles. These can be found in bright enameled colors, sparkling rhinestones, and pastel colors. By 1118 AD Christians controlled the holy land. The First Crusade ended in Muslim defeat, their lands confiscated, and cities taken over. Therefore, they remained on the edge of the newly established Christian Kingdoms, wreaking havoc on Christens traveling to the Holy Land. Pilgrims were streaming by the day into the Holy land, arriving alone, in pairs, groups or entire communities. Muslims lay in wait, bandits roamed freely, pillaging passersby. A night from Champagne, Hugh de Payens founded a new movement consisting of himself and eight others, a monastic order dedicated to providing safe Pilgrims to the Holy Land.
Initially the brotherhood was small, each night pledged vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. They owned nothing individually, everything belonged to the order. By 1128 the fellowship had expanded, gaining political support in powerful places. European Princes and prelates donated land, money and materials, the Pope ultimately sanctioned the order, and the Knights Templar became the only standing army in the Holy Land.
A strict Rule consisted of 686 laws and the Master was the absolute ruler. In 1139 a papal bull placed the Order under the exclusive control of the pope, which allowed it to operate freely throughout Christendom, unaffected by Monarchs. Kings and patriarchs left great sums in their wills. Loans were made to barons and merchants on the promise that their houses, lands, vineyards, etc. The Order's Paris Temple became the center of the world 's currency market. Slowly, the organization evolved into a financial and military complex, both self supporting and self regulating.
The Arche fell in 1291 and thus the Templars lost their base in the Holy Land. With no secuity the Templars became vuonerable to slander. Philip IV of France, in 1307, eyeing the vast Templar assets, arrested many of the brothers. Other monarchs followed suit; seven years of accusations, torture and trials followed which many Knights were executed. Clement V formally dissolved the Order in 1312. The final blow came on March 18, 1314 when the last master, Jacques de Molay was burned at the
