A Tribute to Father Gerry Pryzwara
Although I had heard the rumors, when I walked into Sts. Peter and Paul today and saw cards saying goodbye to Father Gerry, I was truly taken back. I knew that an important part of my life and the life of my family was about to change and never quite be the same again.
When I first attended Sts. Peter and Paul in August of 1998, I did not quite know what to think of this priest whose sermons were, at times, harder to follow then the directions one sometimes gets from the clerk at a country store. There were a few constants; however, one could count on. You always knew where he stood, you knew he was a Catholic, and you knew he was passionate about his convictions. Having attended Catholic school for thirteen years and weekly mass for over forty years, I had met priest like this before, but there was something different about this priest. He was truly the "real deal" in a world where so many take the easy way out. The more I watched him, the more I listened to him, and the more I spoke with him, the more I admired him, respected him, and grew to love him.
The more I watched him, I saw a priest who truly believed and lived the teachings of our church. He stood strong in the face of criticism. His courage gave me the confidence to defend our faith to others. He was humble, yet he was so confident in what he knew, and he never missed an opportunity to teach us about the love of Christ and His plan for our salvation. I knew as I watched him week after week at the consecration of the mass that he truly believed that he was the undeserving representative of the Lord executing the "Sacrament of Amazement" for all of us. His devotion to our Lord in the Eucharist showed all of us the incredible significance of each and every individual sacrifice of the mass. After mass, I watched him deal with many people on many issues. Some were important and others not so important. In many cases he seemed so socially awkward, that certainly was not his forte, but one always knew that he cared very deeply for each of us.
The more I listened to him, the more I learned about my faith and the expectations that the church had for me if I wanted to be part of the Roman Catholic community. He never minced words and he always defended the church, the pope, and in some cases the Holy Trinity itself with a passion that would make a man half his age seem geriatric in comparison. Fr. Gerry did research, he read, and he shared his knowledge with us. He didn't always tell me what I wanted to hear, but he told me what I needed to hear. He said the things that my wife and young children needed to hear. Some of his expressions have become part of our daily family life. We certainly know not to be L-A-Z-Y, we know that things can be blown to "smitherines," we know that if you don't believe the teachings of the church that it is just "too bad," we know why we need to "buckle our seatbelts," we know the value of "tough love" with our kids and that they should not be the "kings and queens" of the home, we know that we as parents are the primary teachers of the faith to our children, we know the meaning of the guards are down the lights are flashing but there is no train coming, we know the difference between saying Good Morning God and Good God Morning, and we certainly pay closer attention to bumper stickers on the road while we travel down the highway. His stories about receiving a hug in Canada from John Paul II with his great big hands, the story about the parish priest recognizing him in the confessional and Gerry running all the way home, his legendary battles with the nuns, his affection for Fulton Sheen and the prayer "Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue," and when Gerry goes to judgment having to serve time in the tape room of purgatory listening to his own sermons are so very memorable. But of all that he shared with us and taught us, his message of love, the significance of the Eucharist, the importance of the crucifix, the power of God's forgiveness in the sacrament of reconciliation, and the strength of conviction are etched as unforgettable lessons in our minds.
Talking with Father Gerry gave an entirely different perspective of this incredible man. Although he certainly preaches "Black & White" from the pulpit, one truly experiences understanding, compassion, and encouragement from him when he is approached individually. I have often told people that I truly wish that I could be as strong in my faith as Gerry, but I am just not there yet. I am on the journey, but I am simply not in the same place where Gerry is. I have said that to him on several occasions and he has never made me to feel "less than" or "negligent" for my feelings. In fact, he always made me feel like I had a partner on the journey. I found Gerry to treat me the way I perceive that God looks at me. I believe that God and Gerry both expect me to be perfect, but they both understand my human frailty and my inability to often stay on the right course. Furthermore, I know that Gerry has the same expectations for himself. I often think, "My God, if Gerry goes to confession every week, what does that say about me?" He has been such an outstanding role model for me and my family throughout the years.
The bottom line is that Gerald A. Przywara is the "real deal." He is a priest who teaches what needs to be taught without regard for criticism, complaints, and sometimes outright slander. He has made an impression on me that will never be forgotten. I will miss him, but what he has taught me will remain with me forever.

About the Author
Greg Domecq is in his seventh year as the Associate Principal at Western Albemarle High School in Crozet, Virginia. In May of 2009, Domecq was presented the Alton L. Taylor Award from the University of Virginia Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa naming him the outstanding administrator in the region. Domecq's current responsibilities at Western include support for the English and Special Services Departments as well as the collaborative initiative, coordinating substitutes, the honor council, transportation, and 10th & 11th grade discipline. Over the years at WAHS, Dr. Domecq has also had oversight of the athletic department, Physical Education Department, textbooks, and teacher duty. On the county level, Domecq served on several committees including the School Business Alliance, the high school discipline steering committee, the behavior management committee, the International Baccalaureate Exploratory team, and the Teacher Performance Appraisal Steering Committee. He is credited with writing the TPA Process Manual, a user-friendly handbook that outlines the implementation of the Teacher Performance Appraisal model.
During Domecq's tenure at the Crozet school, the Warriors have been recognized for several outstanding accomplishments. A few of these accolades are as follows:
- WAHS was identified in January of 2008 as one of only ten high schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia for the Governor's Award for Educational Excellence.
- Western consistently earned SAT scores more than one hundred points over the Virginia and National averages. These scores catapulted the school to a national ranking of 401 by Newsweek magazine in 2006.
- The Warrior Athletic Department earned the prestigious Wachovia Cup for the first time in 2004 recognizing WAHS as the best all-around AA program in the state. Western captured the award again in 2005 becoming only the third school in history to earn back-to-back titles. The Warriors returned to the top-of-the-list for the third time after the 2008 school year.
In 2004 Domecq earned his doctorate in Administration and Supervision from the Curry School at the University of Virginia. His minor areas included Curriculum and Instruction as well as Social Foundations in Education. His dissertation topic, "A Ninth Grade Transition Program, " studied the results of the Summer Leadership Academy at Monticello High School. Domecq has given numerous presentations in the Charlottesville area including visits to the University of Virginia, Piedmont Virginia Community College, Mary Baldwin College, State Farm Insurance, and the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club.
