Portrait of a Mother-in-law
The usual concept of mothers- in- law is that she is a person difficult to deal with, hard to please, over bearing and worse, sort of villainous. She makes the life of her in laws a mess.
This is usually typified in novels, soap operas and movies. In my case, it's different. My mother-in-law she is an exception. If only all mothers-in-law were like her, then this world would be a better place to live in. She is an unsung hero, so I've decided to write an open letter to her.
Dear Mommy Reba,
Lest my lips be sealed forever, it is never too late to express to express what's in my heart. With all the things you've done, every single day, heaven knows you don't get enough THANK YOUs and praises from your family. Let this letter serve as our everlasting showcase of gratitude, love, respect and appreciation from all of us.
You have worked hard to provide everything you've wanted for your kids. And you did it with so much love! You put your own needs aside. Now that they are adults, sometimes they misunderstand these sacrifices but they are lucky to have been blessed with such a wonderful and simple mother! I may not always say the words but I want to let you know that I love you and admire you for all that you've done.
You are a parent who does much more giving than receiving. You are a hardworking mother and at the same time grandmother. Yet, you never receive all the recognition and rewards that you deserve. For how could words ever express a lifetime value especially for a mother-in-law like you who deserve the biggest admiration my heart could ever hold? The demands on you are so very great! No words can describe the depth of my feelings for you. Just the thought of you can bring tears to my eyes, a smile on my lips and a song in my heart. I cherish our good and bad moments together and treasure your generous and supportive spirit. This will go on and on. I can't count all the things you have done for us and how you have made a difference in our lives. You have always provided stability within our family full of love. You've provided for us far more than we ever imagine!
When I look at you, I see the strength in your heart, mind and soul, present only in a loving mother. You have the biggest heart in the entire world! You are the kind of person who loves without condition and never gives up hope no matter how big the struggle. You are amazing just the way you are because you offer all and expect nothing in return. I love you more than words can express. How I admire you each passing day! I realized how blessed I am that you are my mother-in-law. I believe I must have done something good! I can never repay you for all that you have done especially to my children.
I just hope that by sharing my memories of you to all who can read this, they will know how valuable you are to us.
You are a remarkable person and you are loved by so many people whose lives you have touched. You are remarkable, why? You are a giving parent in a selfish world, strong but soft, caring and compassionate. You are flexible and tolerant to our mistakes. I cannot compare you to any other mother-in-law. Your love is ever constant and until eternity.
I recall your explanation why you can do all these things: that you are a pale imitation of your own mother. You claim you do only one fourth of what your own mother had done! You must have come from a line of good mothers! What I will do is to inherit this legacy of exceptional parenting and imitate your footsteps for the sake of future generations. It's very effective. My own kids stand a good chance of turning out to be good fathers and mothers themselves. How lucky can we be!
You have become my role model. You advocate this precept of teaching by example. You've taught me the values of 5 S: sincerity, simplicity, selflessness, steadfastness and above all, spiritual strength.
A strong woman you are because even though the road ahead will be strewn with obstacles, you still continue walking. You always accept the pain and still back up and step forward again. Sometimes the future is as uncertain as it can be and yet you face fear and ahead with courage and faith. You always believe in the bright side of life, facing the daily trials but with head held high.
You love your family without question no matter what we do. You have shaped Peps from such an awkward kid to a confident adult. Your sons and Daddy Pete are lucky to have you and also to us, your in-laws and your grandchildren. Forgiving of our mistakes, you consider our feelings first and I know you always care for us.
You explain to me things like discussion and arguments, tempers that flare up, accomplishments and your delight in our achievements. I will always treasure these moments. I know life will present challenges to us and I will have to harness what you've shown us.
I hope this is an effective way to let you know and all, how such a wonderful, almost perfect being you are and how important you are to us!
I will look up into the sky and exclaim your love will forever light our path and guide our lives.
