The Holy Trinity/La Santisima Trinidad
As aspect of EPMA's dedication to an ongoing rotation of the retablos in the assortment, this exhibition explores photographs of the holy trinity from 18th and 19th century Mexico. The Holy Trinity, the union of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has been a central dogma of Christian theology . In some situations the Holy Trinity is represented as 3 similarly clothed, male figures. In other situations, God the Father is represented as a grey-haired man, the son by a crucified young man and the Holy Spirit by a white dove. Variations of iconography and composition mirrored the artist's talents, the patron's style and or the needs of church doctrine. This collection of ten retablos reveals the ongoing improvement and understanding of the topic "three persons, 1 substance" that some scholars feel is foreshadowed in the Previous Testomony of the Bible.
